Yemen's human rights minister has asked parliament to pass a law setting a minimum age for marriage.

Hooria Mashhour told the BBC she believed there was more chance of making progress on the issue of child marriage in Yemen than ever before.

Those against setting a minimum marriage in Yemen say that it goes against the country's tradition, culture and religion. But some prominent religious clerics have supported the move, citing Islamic sources.

Indonesia's education ministry Thursday strongly criticised officials in a small town in Aceh province for asking children to assess the size of their private parts in a graphic school survey, AFP reports.

A VULNERABLE woman was forced into a sham marriage and raped while kept as a slave above a Burnley shop, a jury heard.

The 20-year-old victim, from Slovakia, was sold to Azam Khan, 34, and held prisoner at his aunt and uncle’s shop in Daneshouse, Preston Crown Court heard.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was kidnapped in mid-August last year while on a night out with her friend.

She was allegedly plied with alcohol in the town of Zemplin, by Imrich Bodor, 44, from Bradford, who is accused of trafficking her for exploitation.

Her identification documents were taken away from her and she was made to travel on a coach for two days to England against her will.

EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) – A judge on Friday ordered an Iraqi immigrant to stand trial in California in the killing of his wife, whose fatal beating prompted international condemnation because it had appeared to be a hate crime.

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Lantz Lewis announced his decision after Kassim Alhimidi’s lawyer urged the court to let his client go, saying there is no forensic evidence linking him to the death of his wife, 32-year-old Shaima Alawadi.

Attorney Richard Berkon Jr. noted no blood or glass was found on Alhimidi’s body or clothing, or in his car. And he said his client does not speak English, raising doubts he was capable of staging the killing as a hate crime by planting the note found in the next room that read: “Go back to your country, you terrorist.”

 Two militants from an Al-Qaeda linked group shot dead a Yemeni man in the southern Lahj province, accusing him of being a homosexual, a police source said on Tuesday.

The attackers who "accused the man of being gay... belong to Ansar al-Shariah," the source said on condition of anonymity.

The attackers from the Ansar al-Sharia group, which is on the US terror list, opened fire at 20-year-old Hashem al-Asmi late Monday in the provincial capital of Huj, the source told AFP, adding that the gunmen fled on their motorbike after killing Asmi.

Ansar al-Sharia is the local branch of Al-Qaeda in Yemen where the network, although weakened, is still active mainly in the southern and eastern parts of the country.

Al-Qaeda loyalists seized large swathes of Yemen's south and east in 2011, taking advantage of a decline in central government control during an 11-month uprising that forced veteran president Ali Abdullah Saleh from power.

Yemeni government troops have since recaptured much of the territory with support from US drone strikes, but the jihadists retain bases in the desert east and frequently carry out hit-and-run attacks using unlicensed motorbikes.

During their control of these areas, the militants had tried to impose a strict version of sharia (Islamic law) on residents, executing or lashing citizens they accused of various crimes. They had also severed the hands of many accused of burglary.
