The Mossos d'Esquadra [tn: Catalonian police] have created a register of Muslim women who wear the burka. In a story on its front page, the Catalonian newspaper El Periódico says that for the last year police officers have been noting down and registering cases of women who wear the niqab or burka.

According to this information, various police units of the Generalitat [tn: Catalonian government] have received instructions to note down and relay internally every new case of women dressed in these Islamic garments. Investigators see a relationship between the use of this attire and the flourishing of Salafism in the region.

The police of the Generalitat want to know how many niqabs and burkas are being used in Catalunya, in what areas, and, insofar as possible, identify the women who are wearing this garment.

The creation of this registry is related to the Generalitat's aim of banning the use of the full veil in public spaces.

Catalunya has been to the forefront of taking measures against the use of the burka, although they have not been free of controversy. Besides, the use of the burka has raised the question of religious liberty.

This is exactly the argument that was put forward in the judgement of the Supreme Court which struck down the burka ban in Lleida. The high court indicated that a town council had no power to regulate or take a decision in a matter concerning religious liberty.

Among those familiar with the true teachings of Islam, it is well known that the life — or as articulated in Arabic, the “blood” — of an infidel, that is, a non-Muslim, is not equal to the life/blood of a Muslim. Few know, however, that among some of Islam’s respected hadith collections, the blood of a non-Muslim is no better than the blood of a dog.

According to a hadith recorded in Sunan Ahmed (Hanbali jurisprudence) and Sunan al-Bayhaqi (Shafi’i jurisprudence), during the course of a discussion about non-Muslims, Caliph Omar al-Khattab — one of Sunni Islam’s “four righteous caliphs” — declared “They are heathens, and the blood of one of them is [like] the blood of a dog.”

The ban stems from religious leaders at Darul Uloom seminary in the India community of Deoband, BBC reported. It encompasses all animated shows, even those with comedic tones, such as cartoons, saying such watching violates the basic principles of Islam, the Deccan Herald reported.
“A cartoon is a picture,” said senior cleric Mufti Arif Quasmi in the Deccan Herald. “Besides, it is not for the children. It should not be watched.”

Strict Islamic law says nothing that Allah created should be mocked — and that cartoons actually mimic what Allah created. At the same time, other interpreters of Islamic law say photographs and real videos are permitted.

The cartoon ban already has been met with some skepticism.
One member of the All India Personal Law Board said the Darul Uloom determination was actually “making a mockery” of Islam.

“I don’t think the muftis who issued the fatwa have any knowledge of the subject or have applied their mind to understanding the art of cartoons at all,” said one senior imam, BBC reported.
Darul Uloom in the past has issued fatwas against women wearing perfume with alcohol, having tattoos, donning jeans or adopting hairstyles similar to those worn by women in the West.

Well, today we learn that fresh sectarian violence struck north-western Burma at the weekend when a 1,000-strong Buddhist mob burned down dozens of Muslim homes and shops following rumours that a young woman had been sexually assaulted by a Muslim man.

A crowd surrounded the police station late on Saturday and then went on an hours-long rampage after authorities refused to hand over the assault suspect, a police officer from the area told the Associated Press.

About 35 houses and 12 shops – most belonging to Muslims – were destroyed before calm was restored, he said. There were no reported injuries.
